These tools keep being reinvented. Every generation of engineers, policymakers, and civic leaders rediscovers that linear thinking fails in complex systems, that interventions produce unintended consequences, that the obvious solution often makes the problem worse. They rediscover this through painful experience rather than through transmitted knowledge, because the knowledge has never been assembled into an accessible, coherent curriculum with a civic motivation. Systems thinking is uniquely suited to interactive demonstration. A feedback loop you can adjust and watch destabilize is more effective than reading Meadows. A tragedy of the commons simulation where you make actual resource decisions and watch the commons collapse teaches what no description can.

Sumarium is an intentional misspelling of samarium — a rare earth element whose alloy with cobalt produces some of the strongest permanent magnets known, holding their field under extreme stress and temperature.
